What Is Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration, or Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), is a condition that affects the macula—the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. There are two main types:

  • Dry AMD – The more common, slower-progressing type caused by thinning of the macula
  • Wet AMD – Caused by abnormal blood vessel growth and leaking in the retina; more aggressive and vision-threatening

Common Symptoms

  • Blurry or distorted central vision
  • Difficulty reading or recognizing faces
  • Dark or empty spots in the center of vision
  • Faded colors or trouble adjusting to low light

Early stages often have no symptoms, so regular eye exams are crucial for early detection.
