What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, usually due to increased pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure). The damage occurs gradually and often without noticeable symptoms until vision loss has already begun.

  • Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma – The most common, slow-progressing type
  • Angle-Closure Glaucoma – A more sudden and urgent form
  • Normal-Tension Glaucoma – Optic nerve damage even with normal pressure levels
  • Secondary Glaucoma – Related to other health issues or trauma

Who Is at Risk?

  • Are over age 40
  • Have a family history of glaucoma
  • Are diabetic or hypertensive
  • Are African American, Hispanic, or Asian
  • Have had an eye injury
  • Use corticosteroid medications long-term

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Loss of peripheral (side) vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye pressure or discomfort
  • Halos around lights
  • Tunnel vision in advanced cases

Regular eye exams are the only way to catch glaucoma before vision is lost.

  • Visual field testing
  • Optic nerve imaging (OCT scans)
  • Dilated eye exams
  • Corneal thickness measurements

These tools help us detect changes early and track progression over time.

Glaucoma Management Options

  • Prescription eye drops to lower eye pressure
